I have always been and still am a lover of rhyme. I look for it in everything around me and love to write it my own way. My hope is that something that I write will encourage others to do likewise...James

The Clean Cut Fields Of Sod
07/15/03

We take so much for granted
that its hard to realize.
Exactly what we have
right here before our eyes.

Unless we stop and look
then we won't ever see.
The things that we can't buy
were not given free.

Someone else paid the price
for all we have today.
And we owe then way too much
to throw it all away.

Others stood where we stand now
and cared enough to give.
Everything they had in life
that you and I might live.

So take a look at what you have
by the grace of God.
And thank the ones who lay beneath
the clean cut fields of sod!

Did You Know
08/02/03

When others read the words you write
they see inside of you.
And what they see lets them know
why you write the way you do.

It's just because that we can't help
from letting us slip out.
And in our writing others see
what we're all about.

If we will write long enough
some will see inside.
And read what's wrote between the lines
we thought that we could hide.

So beware of how you write
if you don't want it told.
For all the secrets you have hid
someone else will hold.

Now I know that this may sound
a tiny bit bizarre.
But just remember how you write
is exactly who you are!

Empty Road
08/15/03
It's a mighty empty road
that we travel on.
When everywhere we look
all our hope is gone.

Standing by the window
staring into space.
Unaware of all the pain
showing on his face.

He once was in his youth
but that was long ago.
And he served his country well
but they don't even know.

Nor even seem to care
how he now hurts inside.
As he struggles with the tears
that he has never cried.

It's a mighty empty road
that should never be.
For one who gave himself
that others might be free.

Another soldier crumbling
underneath the load.
Of traveling all alone
down an empty road!

The Book Never Written
08/25/03

Life is not as complicated
as it often looks,
when just a few simple words
will fill a room with books.

So much truth is covered up
when we refuse to show,
what is inside of us
that only we can know.

And what is in the heart
longing to be free,
never has a chance
for all the world to see.

For words we fail to write
no one will ever quote,
and they become a book
which never will be wrote.

Life is not as complicated
as you might have thought,
so put it into words
lest it become as naught!

Time
09/05/03

The sand is moving swiftly
through the hourglass.
And we are loafing round
as the moments pass.

Doing this and that
and all that's in between.
While that which is important
is passing off the scene.

Some day come tomorrow
we may surely find.
That the thing we most desired
was only in our mind.

And what we needed most
was that which we let pass.
So casually unnoticed
through the hourglass!

One Sided Love
10/21/03

He left her at the alter
with tears in her eyes.
And that is where she finally
began to realize.

That just because you give
a person all of you.
Does not guarantee
they'll do the same thing too.

And many times in life
things must take a drastic turn.
Before we get the message
we need so much to learn.

That many times we're better off
with what we didn't get.
Than messing up our life
in something we'll regret.

And standing at the alter
with eyes filled up with tears.
Just might not be so bad
compared to all the years.

That would be thrown away
by winding up a bride.
In a messed up love affair
that only had one side.

I Don't Mind Being Simple
11/02/03

When I can get my thoughts
down in black and white.
It takes a load off my mind
and fills me with delight.

When I can put myself
into the words of a rhyme.
I feel like I've done something
useful with my time.

And then when others read it
it fills my heart with glee.
Especially if they recognize
that it was wrote by me.

So I'll just go on trying
my best to get it told.
The only way I can
before I get too old.

I know that I won't be
in a class with all the rest.
For the mark I leave behind
will be simple at its best.

But I will put it down
like it comes into my head.
And I won't mind being simple
if simple get's it said!

That's Life
11/14/03

Sticks and stones
Can break your bones
And they most surely will.

And then they'll ache
Make no mistake
As you go over the hill.

In many ways
We live our days
Underneath a strain.

And usually find
Ourselves behind
Because of all the pain.

We can tell
When places swell
That we have arthritis.

And all the fears
Of other years
Are coming back to fight us.

The Little Old Man In Red
11/12/03

If you don't believe in Santa
then I tell you what you do,
explain to me why people
can go the whole year through.

Without the thought of Christmas
ever going through their head,
until the day they see
the little old man in red.

They never think of giving
for any kind of cause,
until they are reminded
by the sight of Santa Claus.

How many other people
do you really know,
that people recognize
just by their HO-HO-HO?

Who else can make a child
grin from ear to ear,
and wish that Christmas came
more than once a year?

Who else can make the season
a better one for us,
and who can do it better
than this jolly old man does?

If you don't believe in Santa
then you surely are naive,
cause if we can't believe in him
then what can we believe?

As Long As Memory Last
11/25/03

We are building memories
each and every day.
Tomorrow we will need them
to help us on our way.

For as we put the years on
and aging takes its toll.
More and more we're gaining
less and less control.

But if we have the memory
of what once used to be.
Then we can go to places
that other eyes can't see.

And there among the treasures
we've preserved along the way.
We will find the something
time hasn't took away.

And again these hands can hold
nuggets from the past.
One's that we will cherish
as long as memory last.
